   There are two possible mechanisms at work when information is delivered to a treatment group: increasing knowledge, or increasing the salience of existing knowledge. We use data from a randomized controlled trial of a health information campaign to identify the relative importance of these two mechanisms in a real-world environment. The health information campaign addressed the benefits of wearing eyeglasses and provided information meant to address the common misconceptions that contribute to low eyeglasses adoption rates. In total, our study sample included 931 students, their parents, and their homeroom teachers in 84 primary schools in rural China. We find that the health information campaign was able to successfully increase student ownership and wearing of eyeglasses, relative to a control group. Using ITT and TOT analysis, we find that the campaign worked primarily by   increasing the salience of pre-existing information among participants, rather than by increasing their knowledge levels.

 

讲座人简介:

    马跃,2015年至2016年,斯坦福大学Freeman Spogli Institute联合培养博士,2017年毕业于陕西师范大学,获得经济学博士学位。2011年至2014年任西北社会经济发展研究中心研究助理,2014年至2017年任教育实验经济研究所研究助理,同时兼任“Smart Focus”项目经理。2013年至今,参加国际评估协会3IE资助的计算机辅助学习项目,目前担任计算机辅助学习、Text Messaging项目负责老师。马跃博士主要研究领域为农村经济发展、农村教育。已在The China Quarterly, International Journal of Educational Development等学术期刊上发表SCI索引论文多篇。
